Book The Seventy-Second

Violence 101 by Denis Wright

Hamish is fourteen, has accidentally killed at least one person due to being unable to reign in his violent impulses, and has just been sent to a home for wayward boys.

This was good. It wasn’t quite as clever as it thought it was, but it was more intellectual than a lot of the rubbish I’ve been subjecting myself to as the year wears on. As the story goes on, it gets a little bit clichéd, but I did like Wright’s refusal to give it a clear-cut, everybody-lives-happily-ever-after ending – things aren’t that simple with the really smart criminals; I should know…

Worth tracking down, and, given that it’s technically a young adult book, it will probably be cheap for you.
